1858 London hardcover. First edition. Volume has undergone repairs: recased using original red boards with sympathetic new leather spine; new endpapers. Interior has moderate foxing, smudges and wear but nothing vandalized. Paginates: [6], (1)-239, errata slip plus 6 unpaginated plates. Complete as issued except for blanks. Numerous engravings in text. Uncommon true first. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: Although classified as fiction by virtually everyone this is a non-fiction book. Parts are an account of his actual travel in Oceania and other parts relate facts about recent world travels in a style designed to appeal to younger readers. Book includes instruction on use of scientific instruments by travellers - an idea adopted not long after by The Royal Geographical Society in "Hints to Travellers" - this book is not imaginary 'juvenalia' as one might be led to believe. A note about shipping outside the US:
Shipping costs from the United States to anywhere outside the U.S. have gone up astronomically. While USPS First Class International is the least expensive, no tracking is provided. Since the beginning of 2020 this class of shipping has become unreliable. Priority Mail International is now the best option and much more expensive. Small lightweight books can be shipped for less than the price indicated so feel free to contact me and I will reduce fee to actual cost.
