London: Longman and others, 1857. xl + 530pp + 24pp (catalogue), in-8 , relié percale éditeur , coins abimés , charnières usées , illustré de 8 planches en couleurs et sous serpentes ,une carte dépliante en couleurs (déchirure au pli) et de nombreuses illustrations dans le texte , cachets sur le titre. De 1850 à 1851, le Resolute (navire amiral), l'Assistance, le Pioneer et l'Intrepid ont navigué dans l'est de l'Arctique sous le commandement d'Horatio Thomas Austin. L'expédition a trouvé des traces du premier camp d'hiver de Franklin sur l'île Beechey. Le Resolute partit dans le cadre de l'expédition de secours en 1850 mais resta coincé dans la glace et fut abandonné en mai 1854. Il fut retrouvé par un baleinier américain, acheté par le gouvernement américain et renvoyé en Grande-Bretagne où il fut présenté à la reine Victoria. Un bureau a ensuite été construit en utilisant ses bois et présenté au président des États-Unis en remerciement; il est maintenant situé dans le bureau ovale de la Maison Blanche.
