THE ECLIPSE OF FAITH Or, a Visit to a Religious Sceptic. (Henry Rogers, St. Albans born Congregationalist). First Edition. Published by Longman et al, London, 1852. Octavo Hardback with Dustjacket. Half burgundy leather with marbled boards. Measures approx. 7.75" x 4.5" (19.75cm x 12cm). (viii) + 450pp. In 1852 Rogers issued anonymously, as 'by F. B.,' his best-known work 'The Eclipse of Faith, or a Visit to a Religious Sceptic,' a dialogue in which the sceptic (Harrington) plays the part of remorseless critic of the various forms of rationalism then prevalent. In the course of three years it passed through six editions, of which this the true first. From Francis William Newman, who figured in its pages in thin disguise, it elicited a 'Reply,' to which Rogers rejoined in 'Defence of "The Eclipse of Faith,"' published in London, 1854. Leather and boards rubbed and scuffed, with a little partial surface loss here and there. Partial cracking to hinges, though boards remain soundly in situ, and the text-block is firm and square. Some foxing and tanning to prelims, with occasional marginal foxing thereon, though contents remain clear and bright nonetheless. Early overlaid spine title plate. Remains a good original survivor, despite the aforementioned faults. Please see photos for further detail. N° de ref. del artículo 001012
