(Six Lectures Delivered in the Inner Temple during the Hilary Sittings, 1896, at the Request of the Council of Legal Education by Augustine Birrell, M. P. One of Her Majesty's Counsel.) Small 8vo., 7 1/4 x 5", 183pp.+catalogue. Dark blue Macmillian's "Golden Treasury" cloth, title, etc. gilt on spine, blind stamped ruled borders on covers. Minor rubbing or wear to edges, top & bottom of spine, slight fading to spine, rubbing to corners. Old rather fragile paper shows tanning of margins, small tear to bottom of p. 11, a few finger marks, 1 ink check mark noted. On titlepage at top in ink: J. F. Bayard (or Mayend ?) London Oct '96. Overall, a near fine copy of a very fragile & scarce book. Birrell (1850-1933), studied law at Cambridge & from 1896 to 1899 was Quain Professor of Law in London. This title was published by Macmillan's in New York in 1897 (the U. S. first edition); there were editions to about 1920. The Golden Treasury type of binding is attractive but doesn't age well, especially in a title that was meant to be read & studied. Birrell is also remembered for his many essays, fine literary biographies & sketches (Frederick Locker-Lampson amongst them) & literary criticism. Quite a rare book in this well-preserved condition.
