Well-preserved (rebound?) in tan calf with mottled silken cloth, gilt bands on spine and titled red-brown morocco; grey-green endpapers. Illustrations throughout by H.K. Browne, AKA "Phiz", including the first published example of the dark plate process. Some foxing present on front matter and plates. Title page vignette features hook on Capt. Cuttle's left hand, 8-line errata leaf after xv, and such points as: no page entry for frontispiece and vignette on p. xv, figetty" on p26, "shewed" and "shew" instead of "showed" and "show" on p.40, "Delight" instead of "Joy" on p. 284, "Capatin" on p324, no period at the end of the last line on p582, etc. (Contact seller for other specifics.) An excellent copy inscribed by "A.E. Ellis," thus possibly the personal property of either the British author Derek Lindsay, who wrote the renowned novel The Rack under the name A.E.
