Cloth, small 8vo, 21 cm, vi, xii, 131 pp, map in end pocket. From the introduction: "The gazetteers themselves are extraordinary products of men usually occupied with the serious matter of government in India. Beginning with the earliest of these by Buchanan and Stirling, the genre comprehends the efforts or three generations of men, working administrators for the most part, to provide a cogent survey of a place in which they served. The gazetteers vary in the quality of their prose, the insights and judgments of the compilers, and the values of the data, but all of them provide an introduction to a part of India which is as vital to the present-day scholar as it was to the administrator assuming a new post. Probably none of the gazetteers is without some serious errors of fact or judgment, and all present problems in their statistics; but the genre as a whole reflects a degree of scholarly competence and achievement among these Englishmen and their Indian associates which may contribute one of the most memorable legacies of the British in India. Here, then, is the definition of a district gazetteer which will serve for this bibliography: A district gazetteer is a comprehensive description of a district or state of British India, published privately, in series, or under the auspices of a governmental body, and including historical, archeological, political, economic, sociological, commercial and statistical data. Omitted from this bibliography are provincial gazetteers unless they are an integral part of a local series, .Because they were intended to provide local information for new officers, district gazetteers might better have been called manuals - as they were in Madras until about 1900. Sometimes gazetteers were called memoirs, reports, notes or observations. ". Boards and top edge of textblock mildly smokestained, with some staining also to endpapers, otherwise Near Very Good in dustwrapper. N° de ref. del artículo ABE-23669
