Red cloth, sunned to spine, rubbed to all faces with various small marks and shelfwear to edges. Spine strip beginning to detach from front and back boards. Binding good. Frontispiece b/w portrait. 252pp., terminal fold-out map. A few marks to rear endpapers. Loosely inserted an invitation to Cecil Headlam to review the book from the editor of 'History', with some pencil annotations. Cecil Headlam (19 September 1872 12 August 1934) was an English first-class cricketer active in 1895 1908, who played for Middlesex and Oxford University, as well as a historian. Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Codrington (c. 1668 7 April 1710) was an English Army officer, planter and colonial administrator who served as governor of the Leeward Islands from 1699 to 1704. Born on Barbados into the planter class, he inherited one of the largest sugar plantations in the colony. Codrington travelled to Europe during the late-17th century and served in the Nine Years' War and War of the Spanish Succession, taking part in numerous engagements. In November 2020, his name was removed from the library he founded at All Souls College, Oxford, as a result the George Floyd protests due to Codrington's ownership of slaves.
