The rediscovery after almost thirty years, of that unique genre known as "swordplay and sorcery" fiction, with its arch~villains and its barbarian heroes has brought forth dozens volumes, old and new, to amaze and entertain a whole new generation of fantasy~lovers. Robert E. Howard, whose Hyborean world and fantastic barbarian king, Conan, are featured in this volume, is the acknowledged master of this type of literature. Although dead now for over thirty years, his books are still selling in the hundreds of thousands in new paperback editions, ,and it is estimated that Howard readers alone number more than three million. Before his rediscovery by the mass reading public, a small band of devotees organized The Hyborian Legion, publishing their own magazine, Amra, edited and published by George H. Scithers. This little magazine, which is still being published, has contributed to the literature a mass of material by students of fantasy, but the circulation was rarely more than a few hundred and many of today's enthusiasts are paying premium prices for back issues. The Mirage Press published some of L. Sprague deCamp's articles from Amra in The Conan Reader (1963), and are pleased that two charter members of the Hvborean Legion, L. Sprague deCamp and George Scithers, have compiled for you the best articles and black & white artwork from the early years of Amra. Here are discussions of Howard, of Conan, of Howard's westerns, of many other sword~and~sorcery authors, from E. R. Eddison to J. R. R. Tolkien, by such noted fantasy and science fiction authors as Paul Anderson, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Leigh Brackett, Fritz Leiber. and others. From a serious literary study of the authors to a tongue~in~cheek round~table discussion of what weapons one ought properly to wear to which occasions, you will find this book a feast for all fans of sorcery and sword. In addition to the twenty~seven articles, one of which is the newly revised Informal Biography of Conan the Cimmerian, there is also a wealt of artwork from artists like Roy Krenkel, Frank Frazetta, Larry Ivie, Jim Cawthorne, and others. The jacket is by frequent Amra contributor George Barr, who has included a portrait of Robert E. Howard on the back of the jacket. N° de ref. del artículo 4111203
