Descripción
4 vols, 20th century cloth, original leather spine-labels, 4to, 29 x 22 cm, approximately 3000 pp. An extraordinary work to which Watt devoted 20 years of his life. It attempts in Part I to capture and list the works of some 40,000 authors, each of whom is also given a brief biographical notice, and in Part II to provide a detailed subject index to the works listed in Part I. Watt also provides entries for "all the early British printers, noticed by Ames, Herbert and Dibdin" and the more eminent early foreign printers, and works are referenced by printer as well as by author. In addition to monographs also indexes the papers written for " the more important periodical works on art and science" including "the Transactions of the Royal Societies of London and Edinburgh, the Transactions of the American, Linnean, Geological, Horticultural, &c. Societies, the Transactions of the Irish Academy, the Archaeologia, Hearn's Collection, Duncan's Commentaries, Nicholson's Journal, Tilloch's Philosophical Magazine, Thomson's Annals of Philosophy, Medical and Physical Journal, and many other works of a similar kind". Parts I-II. Authors and III-IV. Subjects. A reasonable and sturdily bound set, boards somewhat rubbed, the first few pages of Volume 2 heavily foxed, and Volume 4 with some mild waterstaining to contents. N° de ref. del artículo ABE-08413
