Second impression of the true first edition, published in 1959 - the same year as the first impression. With line illustrations throughout by Diana Stanley, including front and rear endpapers and pastedowns, and a full-colour frontispiece. ***Very good in turquoise cloth-covered boards with burgundy titles and illustration to spine and front board. The boards are nice and clean. Top and tail of spine slightly creased. Top corners slightly bumped. There is foxing to the page block edges. Internally, the book is in very good condition, with just some light foxing to the first and last few pages. No inscriptions. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, that has not been price-clipped, and retains the original publisher's printed price of 12/6 net, with "second impression" stated at the top of the front flap. Head and tail of spine and corners of dustwrapper rubbed and creased with just very slight loss. Rear panel of dustwrapper slightly discoloured and rubbed. Front panel of dustwrapper bright. 204mm x144mm. 176 pages. ***'Mary Norton's "Borrowers" have provided me with the only explanation for the wilful way in which small things lose themselves that is not exasperating. We all know that scissors and thimbles and pieces of ribbon do disappear, sometimes if you just turn around for a moment. But one can lose them to the Borrowers without loss of temper. One develops an affection for the tiny creatures, and so for further adventures of Pod and Homily and Arrietty in "The Borrowers Afloat". The family has a rather terrible time in this book, for they have to leave indoor quarters, and are guided by the intrepid Spiller down a drain to the river bank. The voyage is fearsome, particularly when the flood of hot, scented bath water from the big house overtakes them. There is life by the river in a kettle, danger on the river itself, and the final start for a new life in Spiller's knife-box boat. Mary Norton's gift is to make the Borrowers real while never letting us lose sight of their proportions against the huge, antagonistic world of humans that dwarfs their brave, diminutive lives.' - Mary Crozier in the Guardian (Review quote from inside front flap of dustwrapper). ***A second impression of the true first edition, quite hard to find now in the original dustwrapper. The third in the series of four Borrowers books which have become children's classics. Runner-up for the Carnegie Medal. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. N° de ref. del artículo 7513
