Two volumes, Royal Octavo. Vol I : Frontispiece, 444p, 2 coloured + 2 b/w plates. Vol II : [3], pp 446-833p, 4 colour plates. Complete. Original publisher's blue cloth boards, sl worn, lending library labels removed from upper boards, but there are no stamps or orther signs of library use. Spine ends sl worn, corners worn, external joints are sound and not cracked, cracking to internal endpaper hinges, a gathering in volume one has slight insect damage to the gutter margin, not affecting plates or text. Frontis and couple of plates with marginal stain to lower left corner. Overall just about a Good set, sounds a lot worse than it actually is. Published in the USA as "Memoirs of Service Afloat." **** Raphael Semmes (1809 ? 1877) was an officer in the Confederate Navy during the American Civil War. Until then, he had been a serving officer in the US Navy from 1826 to 1860. During the American Civil War, Semmes was captain of the cruiser CSS Alabama, the most successful commerce raider in maritime history, taking 65 prizes. Late in the war, he was promoted to rear admiral and also acted briefly as a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army. His appointment or arrangement to act as a temporary brigadier general from April 5 to April 26, 1865, was never submitted to or officially confirmed by the Confederate Senate.(Wiki).
