Mais deux lectures peuvent en être effectuées : la première consiste à s'immerger simplement dans la vie des Lausannois et à s'imprégner d'une certaine atmosphère urbaine ; la seconde permet cependant, à l'aide de la table des illustrations, une traversée touristique de la ville qui n'oublie aucun de ses centres d'intérêts et reprend un parcours éprouvé dans maints albums antérieurs, de la cathédrale vers les lieux de loisirs, le lac et Sauvabelin. La mise en page se distingue des ouvrages antérieurs par de nombreux jeux graphiques entre les images. Des motifs sont repris des deux côtés d'une double page, tels que le remploi du chapeau (fig. 2) ou l'encadrement d'un feuillage (fig. 3), permettant de relier différents aspects de Lausanne. Les photographies fonctionnent finalement comme un tout, qu'unifie encore l'usage continu d'un fort grain, obtenu par l'emploi de pellicules à haute sensibilité (400 ASA) et de procédés de tirage adaptés. Marcel Imsand s'y plaît à faire contraster l'ancien et le moderne, les toits de la Cité et la vie bouillonnante des rues (fig. 4), la Cathédrale et les Tours de Valmont (fig. 5), les cheveux blancs et les parures juvéniles (fig. 6). Lausanne apparaît ainsi comme une ville vivante où fusionnent passé et présent une ville multiple, en conformité avec le titre et avec le constat liminaire de Jacques Chessex, qui y voit « une ville capricante, [] médiévale et contemporaine, paysanne et industrielle, riche et modeste, faste et discrète, déserte et surpeuplée, et tout ceci au même instant ».
