This VERY RARE gilded & embossed illustrated hardcover book, sorry no dust-jacket. "Under Bayard's Banner - A Story of the Days of Chivalry" By Henry Frith. Illustrator: E. Blair Leighton (EBL). This book is believed to be the First Edition, published by Cassell & Company, Limited, 1886. 12mo, 19.4 cm x 13.2 cm x 4.6 cm, Blue cloth-covered boards, Gilt, black & orange embossed decoration and lettering on spine and front cover, Black embossed decoration on back cover, Brown end papers, Tissue-guarded Frontispiece. 384 pages. Weight: 814 Grams. CONTENTS ARE ALMOST LIKE NEW!!! However, there are several cracks between pages throughout the book, including between pastedowns & end papers at front and rear of book. Spine is discoloured & a bit grubby, bumped & frayed either end with small loss of cloth there, decoration & lettering fully visible but worn away in places, gilt a little dull. Book leans a little. Cover is marked & discoloured in places more so on back, decoration & lettering very nice but slightly worn away in places, gilt quite bright, edge wear. Corners are bumped & frayed, boards exposed there. Top edge tarnished, may have been gilded. Damp stain in top corner of 1st end paper & all pages until main title page, including tissue guard which itself is creased, foxed & slightly split from main body either end of spine. Some pages (very few) have faint smudges/marks mostly in margin alongside spine, and/or tiny edge bumps. Pages 111 to 119 inc. have a small crease on bottom edge. Small mark in bottom margin of p. 177. Very light age tanning & rare foxing throughout, more pronounced on outer edges. RARE SIGNED COLLECTOR'S ITEM, BEAUTIFUL INSIDE!!!
