First edition and first printing. Signed by the author and Curtis Christopher Robinson on the front end page. This is George Norfleet's first published work. An extraordinary documentation as told to him by Tuskegee Airman Curtis Christopher Robinson (1919-2009),a man with a remarkable family tree. Descended from a family of high achievers and only two generations removed from slavery,(his grandfather was a slave),Robinson was conditioned from childhood to work hard, persevere and become educated, all the tools to succeed in life. And that he did in a most remarkable way. This memoir takes you through the life and times of Robinson, his character, determination and accomplishments and the challenges of his era as an African-American man. In response to pressure from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Black Press, and others, the War Department in January 1941 initiated an "experimental program" training African-Americans as pilots. After the U.S. entry into World War II, the Tuskegee Airmen became the first black military aviators in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Trained at the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama, these black aviators flew more than 15,000 individual sorties in Europe and North Africa during World War II. The all-Black 99th Pursuit Squadron of the U.S. Army Air Corps (later called "fighter" squadron) were trained using single-engine planes. This is the memoir of one of those men.
