This is number 469 of 1,050 limited copies SIGNED by Lewis on the limitation page. This late novel by the great midwestern social critic is the story of a middle class white man who discovers some African ancestry. The fallout, a series of social consequences, forces him to choose between living a diminished life among his white peers, or to join the African-American community. The choice is forced upon him when he is forcibly removed form his home in a white neighborhood. Though the novel naturally lacks some of the nuance that modern readers would appreciate given the sensitive topic, Ebony magazine, the NAACP, and many Black readers received the novel very well upon its publication.
