This is a very interesting 32 page printed booklet produced for the pupils of Winterbourne school with the itinerary of a trip they undertook in July 1937 to Belgium and Germany under the banner ?Journey to the Rhineland?, the book with two maps, also has extra interleaved blank pages for notes, this copy belonging to one of the pupils, a L. Oppitz, who has used those pages to record a day by day diary of the trip. Leaving from Thornton Heath Station for London Victoria, then from the coast by ship to Ostend, finding that most of the bed bunks were already taken, so he had to sleep out on the deck all night. From Ostend to Cologne, and so on. Other places visited during the trip include, Bad Honnef, Bonn, Popplesdorf ,The Rhine, Eifel, Mosel, Ahr Valley, The Nurburg Racetrack, Oel Burg, Drachenfels, Ehrenbreitstein, The Castles of the Rhine, Wiesbaden, Burgen, Moselkern, Koblenz, The Brohl Valley, etc The handwritten account of the trip runs to 17 pages. The writer of this account Leslie Oppitz went on to write a number of books on railway histories. The then Home Secretary Anthony Eden, (later Prime minister) was aware of the boys trip and part of a letter he wrote to the school is reprinted in the book A small slim paperback measuring 17cm by 11cm approx. Some marking to covers, internally some creasing and marking, staples rusted else in good general condition.
