St. Clair Thomas was "throat physician toEdward VII, and his standing in the profession was confirmed by the publication of his Diseases of the Nose and Throat(1911) which ran to four editions in his lifetime. . . . Thomson was knighted in 1912, and in 1913 he was president of the section of laryngology at the International Medical Congress held in London. . . . Thomson made safe and successful the operation of laryngofissure for malignant disease of the larynx, previously pioneered by Sir Henry Butlin and Sir Felix Semon. With Lionel College he published Cancer of the Larynx in 1930 [offered here]. Laryngology, by the time Thomson retired from King's in 1924, was gradually beginning to pass from medicine to surgery. . . . He mixed with the famous actors and singers of the time, many of whom had been his patients" (Oxford D.N.B.). "His most original contribution to surgery was the operation of laryngo-fissure for intrinsic cancer of the larynx, a subject second only to tuberculosis in his interests, and one on which he wrote a book in collaboration with Lionel Colledge, FRCS [offered here]. He was attracted to the study of cancer of the larynx through the work of Sir Henry Butlin and Sir Felix Semon, FRCP; and he improved the technique of their operation of thyrotomy for limited cancers of the vocal cord" (Plarr's Lives of the Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons of England" (this is accessible online for free). As for the recipient of this copy, "Herbert Stanley Birkett (1864-1942), C.B., V.D., M.D., LL.D., F.R.S.C. (C.), F.A.C.S., [he] received his M.D. from McGill University in 1886. He specialized in otology and laryngology and was associated in practice with Dr. Frank Buller. In 1893, he became Lecturer in Laryngology at McGill and in 1895 he was appointed as Chair in the subject. Birkett was instrumental in developing the departments of Oto-Laryngology at the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) and at McGill University. During World War I, Birkett helped organize and command the No. 3 Canadian General Hospital (McGill) in France, and became assistant director-general of the Canadian Army Medical Corps earning the rank of Brigadier-General in 1918. From 1914-1921, Birkett was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at McGill and received an honourary degree of LL.D in 1921" (online information from the Osler Library of the History of Medicine, McGill University).
