Two 1841 Issues of Vol. III of the Common School Journal, edited by Horace Mann, Marsh, Copen, Lyon and Webb, Boston, Massachusetts, 1841, 6.25 x 9.25 inches, paginated 114-128 and 178-192. Two folded pamphlets; light edge wear; one has shallow chip to top edge; overall very good condition. Two issues of the Common School Journal - Vol. III No. 8, published April 15, 1841, and Vol. III No. 12, published June 15, 1841. No. 8 contains part IV of "Letters from a Teacher to Her Young Female Friend, Just About Commencing To Keep School", in which a teacher gives advice to her friend on teaching astronomy to children: "I know of no study which has such a grand and exciting influence upon the imagination, and through that, upon the character, as astronomy. While the imagination is young and salient, it should be fed with the food which it craves, - with the marvellous, not of fiction, but of fact." No. 8 also contains "To Females Purposing to Become Teachers", a treatise on the importance of District-School Libraries, "On the Use of the Black-Board", "Summer Schools", and more. No. 12 includes part VIII of "Letters from a Teacher to Her Young Female Friend, Just About Commencing To Keep School", this time discussing the methods of teaching geography through the use of globes and maps. Other subjects covered in No. 12 include further reflections on school libraries; singing in schools; notable English grammarians; and the duties of schools as discussed in the Report of the Charlestown School Committee. A unique and charming pair of journals offering a look into popular teaching methods and opinions in the nineteenth century. May be of particular interest to educators or those interested in astronomy and geography. N° de ref. del artículo 1254
