144pp. 18mo. The second American edition, substantially revised by the author. Susannah Johnson (1729-1810) was captured along with her husband and their three children during an Abenaki raid on Charlestown, New Hampshire in August, 1754. She was nine months pregnant at the time. The captives were removed to Quebec, and sold into slavery to the French. They were finally ransomed in December, 1757. The first account of her ordeal, compiled from oral testimony, was recorded by John Curtis Chamberlain in 1796, with the possible collaboration of Royall Tyler. Johnson herself edited this second edition, correcting it and enlarging it with new material. A third edition was published posthumously in 1814. Howes J153. Ayer 120. Vail 1123. Sabin 36327. Rudely bound in paper-covered wood backed with leather, this copy lacks the lower third of the rear cover. The contents are complete, however, and are generally in very good condition. A very interesting example of what has been called the first indigenous genre of American literature. In custom clamshell case. N° de ref. de la librería 15297
