This charming allegorical map was created for music lovers by Wolfgang Felten , a Bavarian-based artist and children s book illustrator. It shows several landmasses and islands surrounding an ocean and is filled with images and place names related to musical terms, composers, works of music, and types of music. A sea voyage is depicted as a five-line staff extending from Hafenstadt Amati (Amati seaport, named after the famous family of Italian violin makers), to the city of Buxtehude (named after the Baroque organist and composer), to Dingsda ( Nowhere, based on Eduard Kunneke s 1921 comic operetta) on the Land des Lächelns (Land of Smiles). The ships sailing along this sea route are shaped like musical notes. Numerous other composers and musicians are included in the map. On the Insel der Hausmusik (Island of Chamber Music), are references to Haydn, Mozart, and Dittersdorf. The large landmass to the left includes the Hochgebirge der Meister (High Mountains of the Masters) featuring Pachebel, Bach, Buxtehude, Handel, Beethoven, as well as Wagner Massiv, a region dedicated to Richard Wagner s Ring Cycle.
