Descripción
Size: 3 3/8 x 4 7/8 , an antique valentine, or other type of greeting card, which may be partly commercially produced, or, just as likely, partially handmade & assembled; with small, applied cut-out chromolithographic figures & details that have been pasted on. The front consists of a flap of cut & embossed lace paper, which opens to the right to reveal a small (1 1/8" x 1 1/4") square, pasted color litho. of an alpine cottage & scene (visible through the center of the lace frame); this is pasted on a small sheet of coated blue paper, which is pasted to a thiner sheet of white paper backing. With 4 small pasted embossed chromolithographic figures: at top, a group of crocus with printed legend: To little Birdie. Two small floral bouquets (one featuring roses) on each side, and a standing figure grouping of two children in alpine-style dress at bottom. Many of these type of small, fine chromolitho. figures were produced in Germany during the later 19th century & feature the "alpine" details of dress or scenery, shown here. This piece has been removed from a larger paper sheet or album, at some point, and the thin white backing paper is still covered with part of the thicker album paper sheet, that this piece was pasted on (this is possibly removable by an expert paper conservator). These age-related defects are present: portions of the outer edges of thin white backing paper have been torn or chipped away, or were clipped by the person who originally mounted this item; this paper may have originally opened like the lace front (?), but was pasted to the blue paper by the owner; 2 very small paste spots to surface of the blue paper, which have removed the surface blue & transfered it to the back of the lace, small damp (?) stain long upper right fore-edge of the blue paper (visible in the scan), slight wear to left edge of lace margin, & adhering paste to back of piece, with small tear to lower right margin; scattered, light tan spotting t outer lace paper surface. (Scan shows the front of this piece, slightly enlarged). This quite attractive piece, which is suitable for framing, might be entirely hand assembled from purchased items (lace paper form & blue & white paper backings), with small alpine cottage scene inside, and four chromolitho. figures then applied to the lace surface. This card may or may not have been actually designed or used as a Valentine's Day card. This is an authentic antique piece, not a reproduction. Sold as an example of chromolithographic printing and embossed & machine cut lace paper. N° de ref. del artículo ABE-195263028
