New Haven, thick octavo, xxxvi, 596 p., frontispiece and 8 plates (five folding). ***CONTENT: In the first half of the nineteenth century, the three American editions of Bakewell's "Geology" were the textbook of choice for advanced schools and colleges on this side of the Atlantic. Enthusiastically endorsed by Yale's Benjamin Silliman, who praised its style and readability, it also presented a comprehensive, insightful treatment of geologic theory and processes, rocks, minerals, and fossils. Silliman gave the treatise a decidedly "American" flavor via his editing and his 118 p. appendix, partly intended to illustrate the compatibility of geologic evidence and sacred history. ***CONDITION: This is a fully complete, VG copy in the original embossed blue-green cloth covers. The covers are most attractive and well preserved, but half of the spine cloth is missing, and the front board is detached. Rear joints and hinges strong, binding very firm. The text pages and plates are fresh, clean, and bright, with only an occasional foxing spot. The text is much cleaner than most copies I have seen. There is no evidence of previous ownership. With a repaired backstrip, this would be a superb copy of a rare volume in its original state. Ward and Carozzi 106. Hazen 1460. Not in BMNH.
