Oil on hardboard, measuring 18 by 24 inches, signed and titled by Alexis Vincent: "Toussaint Louverture chargé Dessalines le commande de la Crête-à-Pierrot, fin février 1802," on the bottom right corner. The painting depicts the Haitian leader Louverture assigning Jean-Jacques Dessalines the command of Crête-à-Pierrot, at the end of February 1802; several officers appear in the background, beneath large leafy trees. ---- The following month, in a major engagement of the Haitian Revolution, the French colonial army blockaded the Crête-à-Pierrot fort, which was defended by Dessalines s Haitian rebels. After a brave struggle, they were forced to evacuate the fort. Dessalines temporarily swore allegiance to France and, according to some accounts, led Louverture to agree to surrender. Dessalines returned to the field as the leader of the Haitian forces after the arrest and death of Louverture, and the story of the stubborn resistance of the Haitians at La Crête à Pierrot inspired his troops confidence. A remarkable, unrecorded painting by the consummate Haitian artist Vincent (1951-1990) with profound historical significance. N° de ref. del artículo ABE-1701632524942
