The book has two inscription -- the first is on the first blank page: "M. C. Bell from T.W. H. N.P. Rhode Island." On the next page (also blank) is written: "Aug 1873 M. C. Bell from T. W. Higginson of N.P. R. Island." On the title page, someone has also written "Aug 1873." Thomas Wentworth Higginson could be remembered for several achievements in his illustrious career. He was an abolitionist in the decades before the Civil War. He was a Colonel in the 1st South Carolina Volunteers -- the first black regiment in the Civil War. He advocated for the rights of women, including the right to vote. He wrote more than 20 books. He corresponded with Emily Dickinson, encouraging and advising on her work, and eventually collaborating on the publication of her poems after she died. Higginson spent his summers in Newport, Rhode Island, where he founded the Town and Country Club - a literary society. "M.C. Bell" is "Maria Champe (Storrow) Bell", wife of John Wesley Bell of Culpeper, Virginia. M.C. Bell is a 1'st cousin of T.W. Higginson, born at Farley plantation, Brandy Station, Va. John Wesley Bell, an attorney and judge, is the younger brother of Peter Hansborough Bell, 3rd governor of Texas. -- in addition, it's important to note that it's possible that only one of the inscriptions is in Higginson's hand - the other might be a re-copying by the owner of the book, to clarify. Higginson often signed his name with just his first two initials - and initialing was also common at the time. The book itself would benefit from a trip to the bindery -- Dark purple cloth faded to brown, with beveled edges. Gold lettering on spine and gold decoration on the front cover. The spine is faded differently than the boards. There is a tear at the foot of the spine. At the back hinge, there is a 5 inch tear in the cloth, and at the front there's a shorter tear at the hinge. The spine strip and boards are still attached, but begin to be compromised. The binding is still complete, but there are two signatures that are slightly loose, and extent out a bit further than the others. Please email with questions or to request photos.
