6 1/2 inches x 9 in., frontispiece; title-page with bird design; dedication page with letter & envelope design; contents; list of illustrations; xii, 159 pp., illustrated with various size wood engravings, designed by W. T. Smedley and others; some poems have prose introductions giving their backgrounds. Red-brown cloth with elaborate titling in black on gold on the spine, and with designs on the front cover, brown, floral design endpapers, all edges gilt. The spine ends, cover corners show light wear; a printed poem "The Isle of Long Ago", has been clipped from a paper and placed between pp. 8-9, leaving some tanning, and a peacock feather has left some tanning between pp. 106-107. The author's signed inscription is on the first front flyleaf: Miss Ella Gertrude Leaming With the love of Uncle and Friend, Benj F. Taylor Christmas, 1885. Benjamin F. Taylor was a journalist during the Civil War, and some of the poems in this volume have Civil War related themes: Lincoln and his Psalm, The Two Armies, A Vision of Hands; there are also some poems on the 1876 Centennial.
