6 inches x 9 in., design printed on a sheet of very thin tissue (proof) type paper: Portorico (tobacco?), signed in pencil on the lower right: E Kappeler 1920. The sheet shows some light, age-related tanning, creases. From the personal collection of Swiss-born artist and designer, Fred Rentschler, who emigrated to America in the early 1920's, and later taught at the Cleveland [Ohio] School of Art. His collection contained examples of proofs & finished pieces of bookplates, new year's greetings, book illustrations, title-page designs, initial letters, etc. mainly produced by Swiss artists & designers, ca. 1917-22, including a few of his Swiss bookplate designs.
