Seville, Andrea Pescioni, 1582. Folio (29x19 cm). 2 parts in 1 volume. [6], 91, 23 (as 1-13, 9, 17-25), [1 blank] ll. With the woodcut arms of Philips II on title-page and 35 half-page woodcuts. First edition of the first Spanish book on hunting, describing hunting practices in the Americas for the first time. ?The most extensive venatory treatise produced in medieval Spain? (Seniff), with very detailed information on hunting dogs, falconry and mountainous hunting. It is a compilation of Spanish hunting chronicles dating back to Alfonso X el Sabio (1221-1284), closely following the Arabic Moamin Et Ghatrif treatise on the care of hunting dogs and falconry. Philips II ordered the manuscripts to be published for the first time. Editor Argote de Molina added chapters from his own hand on hunting in the Americas. The work is illustrated with 35 woodcut illustrations showing the hunt of various large animals. Particularly interesting are the parts about the Americas, which are the first descriptions of hunting in the New World and the accompanying woodcuts are the earliest depictions of American hunting scenes (Schwerdt). They show indigenous Americans hunting jaguar with bow and arrow and a royal hunt for guanaco in Peru. The America chapters describe bull hunting on Puerto Rico, Cuba and Santo Domingo; Andean ostrich, guanaco, vicunas and llama in the Chaco and Callao areas in south Peru (?the llamas have a very funny gaze?); "tiger" (jaguar) in the mountainous area of Popayán (Colombia). Other chapters describe the hunt of big game such as lion, elephant, rhinoceros and giraffe in Africa. and in the ?kingdom of India? there is an abundance of lion, elephants, rhinoceros, jaguars, tigers, porcupine, gazelles, dromedaries and camels. The woodcuts depict the hunt for boar, bear, birds, elephant, rabbit, deer, lion, wolf and a bullfight in an arena. The chapters on Spain give detailed information on the ecology of certain mountainous areas. Valverde points out in his 2009 annotated study Anotaciones al Libro de la montería del rey Alfonso XI that the descriptions of the Spanish hunting areas provide an important source for the history of biodiversity and climate change. The book was widely popular and well-read, making complete copies in good condition a great rarity. James Edmund Harting calls the book in his Bibliotheca accipitraria of ?extreme rarity?.

Encuadernación de tapa dura. Condición: Muy bien. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Muy bien. Excellent first edition of the famous book title Elpidio of 1835 complete. First vol and second vol 1835 and 1838 edition. Good condition.

THE MALTESE FALCON captures many of the key traits of the genre, including a gritty setting (in this case 1920s San Francisco), morally ambiguous characters where no one seems entirely "good, " and an isolated, lone-wolf protagonist who lacks the gentlemanly demeanor of famous antecedents like Sherlock Holmes. Encuadernación de tapa dura. Condición: Muy bien. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Muy bien. Original book about the life of Chiang Kai Shek signed. On good condition. Chiang Kai-shek (31 October 1887 ? 5 April 1975), also known as Chiang Chung-cheng and romanized via Mandarin as Chiang Chieh-shih and Jiang Jieshi, was a Chinese Nationalist politician, revolutionary and military leader who served as the leader of the Republic of China between 1928 and 1975, first in mainland China until 1949 and then in Taiwan until his death. Born in Chekiang (Zhejiang) Province, Chiang was a member of the Kuomintang (KMT) and a lieutenant of Sun Yat-sen in the revolution to overthrow the Beiyang government and reunify China. With help from the Soviets and the Communist Party of China (CPC, commonly known as the Chinese Communist Party or CCP), Chiang organized the military for Sun's Canton Nationalist Government and headed the Whampoa Military Academy. Commander in chief of the National Revolutionary Army (from which he came to be known as Generalissimo), he led the Northern Expedition from 1926 to 1928, before defeating a coalition of warlords and nominally reunifying China under a new Nationalist government. Midway through the campaign, the KMT?CPC alliance broke down and Chiang purged the communists inside the party, triggering a civil war with the CPC, which he eventually lost in 1949.

Libro Original o primera edición
Cuero. Condición: Bien. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Bien. 1ª Edición. First edition of 1528, The Pagnini Bible was the first to divide the biblical text into numbered verses and one of the first revisions of the Latin Vulgate using the original languages. Sante Pagnini was an Italian monk and biblical scholar who eventually settled in Lyon, France. Like other scholars at this time, he became interested in studying the Bible in its original Greek and Hebrew sources. He completed his Latin translation in 1528, dividing his Bible into numbered verses for easier reference. His divisions, however, are different from the system used today, which was developed by Robert Estienne in 1551. Pagnini?s translation of the Old Testament was widely known for its literal reading of the Hebrew and remained popular until the end of the 1500s. Pagnino was born 1470 at Lucca, in Tuscany, central Italy. At sixteen he took the religious habit at San Domenico in Fiesole, where he studied under the direction of Savonarola and other eminent professors.[1] In acquiring the Oriental languages, then cultivated at Florence, he displayed unwonted quicksightedness, ease and penetration. His genius, industry and erudition won him influential friends, among them the Cardinals de'Medici, subsequently popes Leo X and Clement VII. As a sacred orator his zeal and eloquence kept abreast with his erudition and were as fruitful. Summoned to Rome by Leo X, he taught at the recently-opened free school for Oriental languages until his patron's death (1521). He then spent three years at Avignon and the last seven years of his life at Lyon. Here he was instrumental in establishing a hospital for the plague-stricken, and by his zeal and eloquence, diverted an irruption of Waldensianism and Lutheranism from the city, receiving in acknowledgement the much coveted rights and privileges of citizenship. Here he also was in contact with the polymath and Hebraist Michael Servetus, whom he gave his notes to, and designated him as his heir to the scholarly study of the bible after he would have died. The epitaph of Pagnino, originally adorning his tomb in the Dominican church at Lyon, fixes the date of his death on 24 August 1541, at Lyon, beyond dispute. 24, 5 centimetros 29 hojas sin numerar +1-135 + 1-98 foliadas + 70 sin numerar. Libro Original o primera edición
Encuadernación de tapa dura. Condición: Excelente. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Muy bien. 1ª Edición. Very important book of the history of CUBA XIX century. Printed in Imprenta y papelería de Barcina, Havana, 1852. 332,[2]pp. plus lithographic frontispiece, twenty engraved plates, and numerous in-text woodcuts. In Spanish. Modern half morocco and marbled boards. Very good condition. One of the most important works of costumbrismo in Latin America, and the first collection of its kind in Cuba, with contributions from several notable Cuban writers, and illustrated by Victor Patricio de Landaluze. In the early 1800s a large number of authors and artists in Spain participated in the costumbrismo movement, an important precursor to later 19th-century realism that generally involved written or pictorial sketches of a particular country's or region's social "types," customs, and manners. By 1830 the movement had spread to Cuba, among both native authors and Spanish artists traveling abroad. In the latter category was Victor Patricio de Landaluze (1828-89), the illustrator of the present volume, who eventually settled in Cuba and founded the satirical newspaper, DON JUNÍPERO. LOS CUBANOS PINTADOS. features twenty of Landaluze's illustrations of Cuban types ("La coqueta," "El tabaquero," "El litigante," etc.), engraved on plates by Jose Robles, and includes numerous in-text woodcut illustrations by Robles. The chalk-style lithographic frontispiece view, presumably by Landaluze, depicts a crowd viewing "TIPOS CUBANOS" in a peepshow box at an outdoor gathering. A total of thirty-eight types are described in the volume, often in a combination of prose, dialogue, and verse, by a variety of Cuban costumbre writers, most notably José Victoriano Betancourt, Manuel Costales, Manuel Zequeira, and José María de Cárdenas y Rodriguez. In her "Survey of Cuban Costumbrismo," Roberta Day Corbitt discusses Cárdenas at length, noting the "humorous irony of Cervantes" in his costumbre satire. Corbitt also cites Cuban biographer Francisco Calcagno, who states that between Cárdenas and writer Anselmo Suárez, "the two have made the most complete and finished picture of the physical and moral condition of a country which was ever traced by the pen of any writer" (Corbitt, p.43). A significant and surprisingly rare volume, with no copies listed on OCLC. Dawn Ades, ART IN LATIN AMERICA: THE MODERN ERA 1820-1980 (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1989).

Víctor Patricio de Landaluze (1828 - 8 June 1889) was a Spanish-born painter active for much of his career in Cuba. He is the best-known Cuban practitioner of costumbrismo, depicting Cuba peasants (guajiros), landowners, and slaves. He taught at the Academy of San Alejandro in Havana, and served as its director. He opposed Cuban independence, an attitude reflected in his work; nevertheless his paintings provide a valuable view of nineteenth-century Cuban society. His works also depict a somewhat idealized view of plantation life.Good, likely re-bound with leather at spine some years ago, light soiling, bumped corners, front hinge starting withfive small pieces of modern Scotch tape added though need for them is unclear, back hinge cracked, no markings, scattered light foxing. First Cuban book about SUGAR FABRICATION. Super very rare Cuban Book and one of the more importants. Cuba has a long-established scientific history which could be considered to have started with the publication in 1673, in Spain, of the first scientific tome written in Cuba by Lazaro de Flores, a physician. The first scientific paper published in Cuba itself was in 1714 and was on astronomical observations. The founding of the Real y Pontificia "Universidad de San Gerónimo? in Havana in 1728 for the study of medicine formally established medical scientific investigation and this was followed by the founding of the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País based in the scientific output of the universities, in 1793. ? The year 1797 is considered the year of ?scientific explosion? because of the number of scientific papers emanating from La Habana. They included "Disertación sobre algunas plantas cubanas", "Oración inaugural en elogio de la cirugía", "Disertación sobre la fiebre maligna llamada vulgarmente vómito negro"," Discurso sobre las buenas propiedades de la tierra bermeja para el cultivo de la caña"," Memoria sobre el mejor modo de fabricar azúcar ? and, in July that year, the first defense of the theories of Copernicus was published. ? By 1826 there had developed a significant life-sciences scientific establishment which was evidenced in part by the launching of the Medical Journal of Havana in 1840 and the creation of the Real Academia de Ciencias Médicas, Físicas y Naturales de la Habana in 1861. In 1867 the Academia de Ciencias in Havana was founded, followed by the Sociedad Para Estudios Clínicos in 1879, representing the first multi-disciplinary health sciences organization in Cuba.
