First Edition. 8vo. 22cm x 14.5cm. Publisher's black cloth, titled in gilt to spine, lacking dustjacket, some marginal bumping and light wear, a strong, handsome copy. 270pp. [incl. Index]. Internally clean. Illustrated throughout. A thoughtful and academic examination (and some debunking; Shah's intention was to render magical texts available to all, rather than reputedly kept secret) of the mainstream historical views on witches and sorcerers, from the fascinating Idries Shah. Biographer of Gerald Gardner, the grandfather of Wicca, and friend to many writers and thinkers, including Robert Graves; Shah, a Sufic thinker based in London, wrote on many subjects, and was the founder of a somewhat controversial scholarly institute based upon the teachings of Gurdjieff, which he set up at Lord Baden Powell's old estate outside Tunbridge Wells, probably the least Sufic or ecstatic place in the UK, although visitors and followers included J.D. Salinger, Doris Lessing, Ted Hughes, and Desmond Morris.
