Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Decorated green cloth with elaborate gilt and pale green design of leaves and stalks to front with lettering in bright gilt. Same to spine but slightly faded. Small book is tight, sharp-cornered and mostly square with a slight lean to the spine. Patterned endpapers and full color striking frontispiece. Illustrations by J. C. Leyendecker and all pages with beautiful botanical decorations in the margins and heads by Bertha Stuart. Scarce, early time-travel title - lead character Richard Bourne, is on a ship out of Charleston, bound for New York, when a storm rises up and he gets swept into the ocean. Upon landfall, he realizes he's been put back 150 years. Fascinating, ahead of it's time.

Decorative Cloth. Condición: Good +. No Jacket. J. C. Leyendecker, Bertha Stuart Ilustrador. First Edition. This 158-page, 101-year-old offering in G + condition is The Voice in the Rice by Gouverneur Morris, published by Dodd, Mead and Company in 1910. Not an ex-library copy, there is some modest yellowing of the text's pages as well as its endpapers front and back, there is webbing to be seen between pages 38-39 and pages 118-119 of main text, and some very slight shelf wear seen at top and bottom edges of volume's spine. This is a most interesting, original story, set, as far as I could tell, off the coast of South Carolina, in the present. Our hero, one Richard Bourne, is on a ship out of Charleston, bound for New York, when a storm rises up and creates havoc for anyone on deck. In trying to jockey for the best grip on the hand line along the deck-house, Bourne loses his grip and is swept with great force into the ocean. He is a strong swimmer and experienced in the water, so he doesn't panic. He also strips his clothing off for buoyancy purposes--he doesn't, after all, know how far he may have to swim to find shoreline, and safety. Long story short, he makes shore alright, alone, naked, and very, very, cold, and ravenous. Our hero eventually makes the acquaintance of one Sir Peter Moore, and Sir Peter's slave/servant, Coffee Pot, a strapping negro(in the parlance of the book). I just do not want to spoil the story for you, Reader. . Just be aware that things are not as they should be in this marshy/swampy series of streams, creeks, patches of land, bays, and inlets . . . South Carolina Country of the early 1900's. It looks familiar to Bourne, in a way, but somehow different, too. In conversation with Sir Peter, things political, legal, social appear to be turned upside down to benefit a chosen few, Sir Peter among them. And, I haven't even mentioned the full color Illustrations, six(6) in all, rendered by one J.C. Leyendecker(there is, also, a List of Illustrations included, which immediately follows the Contents page). Charming Decorations, done by Bertha Stuart, adorn the left and right margins of every page of this offering, too. This writer, whatever his or her REAL NAME, is clearly ahead of his/her time. This is one I'm going to finish while we have it here/before it sells, for I'm fairly certain someone will want to further explore this volume. Thank you!!.
