Libro
Paperback. Condición: Good. 'A president moves through his days surrounded by literally hundreds of people whose relationship to him is that of a doting mother to a spoiled child. And this also explains why presidents do not like the press. The media has this nasty habit of telling or reporting things as they are and these usually bring pain to presidential ears. Of the few social institutions which tend to keep a president in touch with reality, the most effective-and the most resented by the chief beneficiary-is the press. It is the only force to enter the White House from the outside world with a direct impact upon the man in the Oval Room which cannot be softened by intermediary interpreters or deflected by sympathetic attendants.'. Inscription from author. 191 pages.

Hardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. George Tames (Back Jacket photograph) Ilustrador. First Printing [Stated]. The format is approximately 5.5 inches by 8.25 inches. xvii, [1], 205, [1] pages. Index. Signed by the author on the fep. Publisher's/Distributors sticker on back of dust jacket. The author was a political correspondent, and also served as Press Secretary and Special Assistant to President Lyndon Johnson. He expresses concern about the increasing insulation of presidents from direct contact with their constituents. George Edward Reedy (August 5, 1917 - March 21, 1999) was the tenth White House Press Secretary, and served under President Lyndon B. Johnson from 1964 to 1965. In 1965 Reedy took a leave of absence over his disagreement with Johnson's Vietnam policies. In 1968 he returned to the White House to work as a special assistant shortly before Johnson's surprise announcement that he would not seek reelection. After Johnson left office, Reedy published The Twilight of the Presidency in 1970. The book was a critical and influential look at the modern American presidency and, in particular, at the impact that war has had on the office. While the book was not specifically critical of Johnson, the former president was reportedly unhappy with its frank assessment of the presidency and refused to speak with Reedy ever again. Early in his post-Watergate presidency, Gerald Ford asked his White House staff to read it. In 1972 Reedy accepted an appointment as professor and dean of the journalism school at Marquette University. Reedy resigned as dean in 1976, but continued as Lucius W. Nieman Professor of Journalism (1977-1990) and Professor Emeritus (1991-1996). George E. Reedy assesses the Washington scene from his experience as a reporter and as a political participant. He had been United Press correspondent for the House of Representatives, Executive Director of the Senate Democratic Policy Committee. Mr. Reedy is a lecturer and consultant on labor-management relations, and public affairs.
