Second edition. Signed by the author "Yours truly, Robert Blatchford, 1899." 8vo., orig. red cloth, 284pp. Bump on lower edge of both covers, cloth slightly soiled o/w near fine. Robert Blatchford (1851-1943) is best known for his work as a socialist campaigner and activist for the Labour Movement. In 1891 he founded The Clarion newspaper which would later publish a series his of articles on socialism; in 1893 the articles were reissued in book form as Merrie England. Merrie England went on to sell over two million copies in Britain and America and was translated into six languages. The Manchester Guardian said that "For every convert [to socialism] made by Das Kapital, there would be a hundred made by Merrie England." Tommy Atkins has been described as a "realistic, and Kiplingesque story of life in the ranks.".

Half title. Orig. red cloth, blocked & lettered in black, spine lettered in black & gilt; dulled & sl. rubbed, spine darkened. Ink inscription on first blank: 'To A.P. 1941.' Not in Wolff, who records 2 other titles by Blatchford. First published in 1895. Copac records this edition in London Metropolitan and Sheffield Universities only. Robert Blatchford, 1851-1943, was a well-known journalist, author, and socialist campaigner. In the early 1870s, Blatchford joined the Army and by 1874 had risen to the rank of Sergeant Major; he left the Army in 1877. 'Tommy Atkins' is the slang name given to common soldiers in the British Army, and this novel is based loosely on Blatchford's own experiences in the military.
