Publicado por Fred Plaut, New York, 1955
Librería: Royal Books, Inc., ABAA, Baltimore, MD, Estados Unidos de America
Three vintage borderless double weight photographs of author Truman Capote and Colombia Records vice president Goddard Lieberson, taken by Columbia Records recording engineer and photographer Fred Plaut, with Plaut's photographer stamp on the versos, circa 1953-1955. In 1953 Capote made his first spoken word recording for the 1953 "Columbia Literary Series," a twelve lp box set of noted authors reading short stories, essays, and novel excerpts, conceived and edited by Lieberson, then Columbia Records vice president. Capote's contribution to the set was his 1948 short story, "Children on Their Birthdays." Capote's only other spoken word recording for Columbia Records was in 1955 for a 10" lp for Columbia Masterworks of the 1950 short story "House of Flowers," published in 1950 in the literary journal Botteghe Oscure VI and reprinted in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" in 1958. It is one of these two recording sessions, likely the former as we find no evidence Lieberson was involved with the latter, that are the probable settings for the photographs found here. Either date would also correspond with the address in Plaut's photographer stamps on the versos, "319 East 50th St. New York 22 NY," which uses the "22" New York postal zone, in use from the 1940s until 1963. Lieberson, president of Columbia Records from 1956-1971 and again from 1973-1975, was a modern day impresario in the record business, and was responsible for the introduction of the long-playing record (lp) by Columbia in 1948. One of Lieberson's greatest legacies was the production of over fifty original cast recordings of Broadway shows, which included "My Fair Lady," "The Sound of Music," and "West Side Story." Lieberson was also a pianist and composer, and studied under George Frederic McKay at the Eastman School of Music in the 1930s. Plaut was Columbia Records chief recording engineer and worked at Columbia from the 1940s through the 1960s. Plaut engineered sessions for some of Columbia's most noted albums, from the original cast recordings of "South Pacific" and "West Side Story," to jazz classics such as Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" and the Dave Brubeck Quartet's "Time Out." Plaut was also a noted photographer, who, while working for Columbia, photographed thousands of candid portraits of musicians, actors, artists, and writers, including Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Glenn Gould, Igor Stravinsky, Edgar Varèse, and many others. Plaut's photography appeared in numerous major magazines in the US and internationally, as well as being credited on over 80 album covers. 2) approximately 9.5 x 7.5 inches. 1) 9.5 x 6.5 inches. Near Fine.

Handsomely bound in finely woven yellow cloth stamped in gilt and black on the spine. Very clean and tight throughout; virtually unread. With bright blue topstaining. Dedicated to Truman's lover Jack Dunphy. In a price-clipped, original dust jacket designed by Ismar David with date code of "10/58" at the bottom of the front flap. With darkenbing and soiling to the spine; the white title is very faint, but "Truman Capote" and "Random House" are very clearly printed in bold black ink. Light soiling to the rear panel which features a charcoal drawing of Capote. With two short closed tears at the top edges. Overall, a very good copy of this classic novella in the scarce dust jacket with an uncommon signed/presentation by Capote: (Signed & Inscribed in black ink on the half -title page by Truman Capote: "For Norman good wishes from his friend Truman Capote" ). The 3 stories included are: House of Flowers, A Diamond Guitar, and A Christmas Memory Breakfast at Tiffany's is a novella by Truman Capote published in 1958. The main character, Holly Golightly, is one of Capote's best-known creations. In autumn 1943, the unnamed narrator becomes friends with Holly Golightly, who calls him "Fred", after her older brother. The two are both tenants in a brownstone apartment in Manhattan's Upper East Side. Holly (age 18 19) is a country girl turned New York café society girl. As such, she has no job and lives by socializing with wealthy men, who take her to clubs and restaurants, and give her money and expensive presents; she hopes to marry one of them. According to Capote, Golightly is not a prostitute but an "American geisha". Holly likes to shock people with carefully selected tidbits from her personal life or her outspoken viewpoints on various topics. Over the course of a year, she slowly reveals herself to the narrator, who finds himself fascinated by her curious lifestyle. The novella was loosely adapted into the 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany's starring Audrey Hepburn and directed by Blake Edwards. The movie was transposed to circa 1960 rather than the 1940s, the period of the novella. In addition to this, at the end of the film the protagonist and Holly fall in love and stay together, whereas in the novella there is no love affair whatsoever Holly just leaves the United States and the narrator has no idea what happened to her since then, except for a photograph of her with a tribe in Africa. Capote originally envisioned Marilyn Monroe as Holly, and lobbied the studio for her, but the film was done at Paramount, and though Monroe did independent films, including for her own production company, she was still under contract with Twentieth Century Fox, and had just completed Let's Make Love with Yves Montand. Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Capote, Truman. Breakfast at Tiffany's: A short novel and three stories. New York: Random House, 1958. First edition, first issue printing. Signed by Truman Capote. In the original publisher s orange first issue dust jacket and yellow cloth binding. Presented with an archival clamshell case. This is a signed, first edition, first issue of Truman Capote's classic novella chronicling the adventures of the free-spirited Holly Golightly, Breakfast at Tiffany's. In addition to the title novella, the book also includes three other short stories: House of Flowers, A Diamond Guitar, and A Christmas Memory. The book is issued its first issue dust jacket with the 10/58 date code one the front flap. "First Printing" is stated on the copyright page and the book signed by the author Truman Capote on the front flyleaf. Capote originally sold his story Breakfast at Tiffany's to Harper's Bazaar for $2,000, with intended publication in its July 1958 issue. Shortly after the publication was scheduled, Harper's editor Carmel Snow was ousted by the magazine's publisher, the Hearst Corporation, and Hearst executives began asking for changes to the novella's language as there was concern that Tiffany's & Co., a major advertiser, would react negatively. The story was removed from the Harper s Bazzar publication schedule but Capote soon resold the work to Esquire for $3,000. His novella appeared in Esquire s November 1958 issue. A collection of the Breakfast at Tiffany s novella and three short stories by Capote was published by Random House in the same year. The novella received glowing reviews. "If you want to capture a period in New York, no other book has done it so well. He could capture a period and place like few others" (Norman Mailer). The novella was quickly adapted for the 1961 hit film starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard. Truman Capote was born in New Orleans and educated in New York and Connecticut. He worked in the Art Department of The New Yorker and as a writer on a television show before going on his own as a full-time writer. His first novel at age 24, Other Voices, Other Rooms, brought him literary fame and a strong following, which continued throughout his life, reaching a peak with the success of his "nonfiction true crime novel In Cold Blood. Capote s story, Shut a Final Door, won the O. Henry award in 1946. CONDITION: Very good condition. Octavo. Retains the original first issue orange dust jacket, now protected with a mylar sleeve. Book is presented in original hardcover yellow cloth binding with black spine. Binding is tight with only a light slant to the spine. Signed by the author in black ink on the front flyleaf. The signature reads Truman Capote. Interior pages are healthy, with stated "First Printing" on the copyright page. Book Dimensions: 8 1/4" H x 5 3/4" W x 1 1/8" D. Book is presented with a new archival clamshell case. Case is 1/4 leather and cloth, with raised bands and girl tooling to the spine and an inlaid photograph of Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly on the front. Signed by Author(s).
