It grows out of a ten-year collaborative experience of the authors and their many colleagues in doing, in learning, and in teaching psychotherapy within the Menninger School of Psychiatry. It originated with a Psychotherapy Supervision Council fashioned initially as a vehicle for the teaching of psychotherapy to students in the clinical psychology training program, for the teaching of the skills of supervision to a supervisory group of staff psychiatrists on the faculty of the Menninger School of Psychiatry, and for the systematic study, by a Workshop method, of the theory and technique of supervision itself. Shortly thereafter, the trainee base was broadened beyond the psychology internes to the psychiatric residents, and a systematic (though experimental) training program, focused on the trans-mission of psychotherapeutic skill as a teachable body of knowledge, became established as an integral part of the educational activity of our Topeka setting-first in a supervisory seminar at Winter VA Hospital, and subsequently in a similar seminar at Topeka State Hospital. To these tasks the authors have brought a diversity of experience and training; the senior author in clinical psychology, social work, and psychoanalysis; the junior author in medicine, psychiatry, and psycho-analysis. They have trained students representing the various disciplines engaged in psychotherapeutic work in a diversity of clinical settings-a Veterans Administration hospital, a State hospital, and a private sanitarium; a hospital setting for adults and a residential treatment setting for children, as well as outpatient settings for both, a mental hygiene clinic for adults, and a guidance center for children.
