Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. SECOND AMERICAN EDITION. 8 vo. Orig. cloth. 422, (2, blank), 24(pub. cat.) pp. Text woodcuts of apparatus. The AUTHOR'S COPY with his bookplate and a laid in A.L.S. from Henry Carey Baird, the publisher of this edition, to John Hall, the printer in Southbridge, Massachusetts, dated Oct. 27, 1873 on his letterhead. Baird makes reference to aspects of the printing history of Napier's book specifically referring to this 1869 edition and enclosing a copy intended to be furnished to Mr. Napier. Spine a bit faded, and top of spine slightly worn; a very good copy. The first edition of James Napier's (1810-84) text on the chemistry of dyeing was published at London in 1853, and the American edition followed in the same year published by the pioneering 'Industrial Publisher', Henry Carey Baird of Philadelphia. After a second London edition of 1858, there was a period when the book was out-of-print until Baird brought out an improved second American edition up-dated with new material on the chemistry of coal tar colors(aniline dyes) by the chemist and engineer A.A. Fesquet, an appendix digesting the reports of the international jury on the dyeing and calico printing shown in the Universal Exposition, Paris, 1867, and full index. A third London edition was published in 1875. Bolton II.307. Edelstein 3315 - Phila., 1853 edition.
