n.d. ['1921' to spine, but COPAC lists 1912: a misprint?]. Limited edition, no. 2679 (one of 500 printed on 'papier d'Arches', states the limitation page, however, according to COPAC: 'The limitation notice on the half-title verso appears to exist in at least three forms, two of which must be incorrect'). 12mo, pp. [4], 180 [of 194]. Text in Latin with the French translation to recto. Paper wrappers with integral parchment jacket, lettered in red and black, with device. Edges rough trimmed. Title page in red and black, reproducing the front cover. Decorative head and tail pieces. Defective: lacks final gathering. Spine cocked, ends nicked. Integral jacket browned and spotted, some light cockling. A very few spots and stains, else, internally clean and tidy, indeed, pleasingly so. In additional protective jacket: browned. Unfortunately, a defective copy of this reissue of De Sodomia, extracted from Father Sinistrari's De delictis et voenison, originally published in Rome in 1754. Bibliotèque des Curieux was published by Robert and Georges Briffaut; a library specialising in 'curious' titles, it reissued classic/al erotic literature. The Briffauts managed successfully to evade the French censor from 1908 until 1925, when Robert was sentenced to two years in prison for insulting morality. Le Coffret du Bibliophile ('Box of the Bibliophile') imprint drew heavily on Isodore Liseux's serious and scholarly publications of 'curious' works, even down to their format and appearance, which mimicked his house style. Liseux first extracted and published this title in 1879, with the Latin and French edition following in 1883.
