Although not marked in any way, this copy comes from the personal collection of Otto Penzler, legendary editor and founder of the Mysterious Press, an award-winning icon in the genre. 9.5"x6.5", 312 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Detective Chief superintendent Bob Skinner is a hard man. As head of Edinburgh's CID he has seen it all, but the discovery of a savaged corpse in a dark alleyway just off the famous Royal Mile comes as a shock even to him. The victim is soon identified as a successful young lawyer, and the motive for his brutal death is an utter mystery. As further seemingly random killings scandalize the city, a disturbing pattern seems to emerge which points to a viscous serial killer. But then the murdered lawyer's fiancée dies in ambiguous circumstances which seem beyond the bounds of mere coincidence. His suspicions aroused, Skinner and his team begin to probe both the present and the past. What he eventually uncovers is an elaborate smokescreen shrouding a deep-rooted and very intricate conspiracy. But whatever the danger to himself, and whatever political expediencies surround this bizarre sequence of violent killings, he becomes ever more determined that in Edinburgh, at least, folk will abide by Skinner's rules. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Folio. 19 x 19 inches. Booklet, 12mo. 4 x 5.75 inches. 24 pp. Folding hand coloured, engraved and printed playing surface, dissected into twelve sections and mounted on to linen, in stiff card marbled slipcase with coloured printed paper label. A game devised to educate young children in some of the basic facts of English history, the accompanying booklet supplying a concise account of events during the reign of each monarch. It was originally provided with an eight-sided dice and twelve letters for players to select, which have not survived. The rules give the directions for the appropriate fines and rewards which apply to each space landed on. These involved payments of cash, the winner 'who arrives first at the Treasury,' took the stakes and all remaining forfeits. John Harris (1756-1846) managed and then took over the Juvenile publishing business of Elizabeth Newbery in 1801, selling it in 1843.
