Hardback. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. THE SIEGE OF VIENNA John Stoye. Collins, London 1064 First Edition 350pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is in FINE condition with the stock tight, bright, white and square, the unclipped dustwrapper has fared less well and has two lonk tears to the back panel which has at some time been repaired with sellotape however it is all there with some edge wear so best described as VERY GOOD. This has now been covered in removable clear protective mylar film. The Siege of Vienna by the Turks in 1683 is one of the turning points in European history. Until the arrival of the Red Army in 1945 it was to be the last serious threat to the existence of Western Christendom. So great was the shock of this irruption that countries normally jealous and hostile sank their differences in a common effort to drive back the armies of Islam and their still more terrible allies, the savage Tarter tribesmen who were burning, looting and killing all over the peaceful countryside at the heart of Europe. The defeat of the Turks at the very moment they had breached the walls of Vienna was decisiv both in its remote and immediate concequences. The Ottoman Empire suffered a blow from which it never fully recovered; and the Hapsburgs, till then primarily concerned with maintaining and expanding their power along the Rhine turneds their gaze more and more to the tempting prizes that lay along the Danube to the South and East. The hot September day that witnessed the last great trial of strength between Cross and Crescent opened and epoch in European history that was to last until the cataclysm of 1914. Ref R7.
