Second English edition. Original single leaf engraving, after Durer, from the second English edition of The Ship of Fools. This leaf p.53 shows students mocking University students of the ear and their idle search for illicit pleasures. Some light dampstaining and minor edge wear. Scarce single leaf from the very famous illustrated book. This particular image is one done after the original 15th century Albrecht Durer cut. English translation of Sebastian Brants Stultifera Navis qua ominum mortaliium narratur stultitia better known as The Ship of Fools transalted by Alexander Barclay. The first edition of 1494 had several woodcuts illustrating the work of a young Albrecht Durer. Twenty six different editions appeared in the 15th century. The English transaltion by Alexander Barclay appeared in London in 1509 and again in 1570. Profusely illustrated in all early editions the book tells of a shipload of fools setting sail for Narragonia, the fools paradise. It satirically presents over 100 fools representing contemporary shortcomings. Citations: STC 3546. Pforsheimer 41.
