List of illustrations, Commentary in English, Kommentar in Deutsch; Bibliography.The Rosary of Joan the Mad was illuminated by Simon Bening, the most prestigious Flemish painter and illuminator of the sixteenth Century. The text written in Old Spanish, the lavish illuminations, their brilliance and quality, are credited to a royal commission by the Castillian court and its ownership attributed to Joan I of Castille. Rosario de Juana la Loca. Johanna I. ?die Wahnsinnige, 1504-55 Koenigin von Kastilien und Aragon, Tochter Ferdinands II. und Isabellas der Katholischen, geistig verwirrt, doch als Erbin der Kronen anerkannt, vom eigenen Vater fur regierungsunfhig erklart und 1509 von Staatsaufgaben entbunden, gab das Werk zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts bei Simon Bening in Auftrag. Der Flame Bening (um 1483-1561) war der herausragendste Miniaturist seiner Zeit. Der portugiesische Diplomat und Humanist Damiao de Goes bezeichnete ihn um 1530 als den besten K?nstler der Buchmalerei. Zu Benings ber?hmtesten Kunden zuhlten Kaiser Karl V. und Ferdinand, Infant von Portugal. In Benings Werkstatt in Br?gge entstand die gewunschte Handschrift, ein Rosenkranz, dessen 16 farbenpruchtige Miniaturen die zugehrigen, in altspanischer Sprache verfassten Gebete illustrieren. Der Gebrauch des Rosenkranzes, einer am Vorbild der 150 biblischen Psalmen orientierten marianischen Gebetsform, war nach dessen Vereinfachung, d.h. einer Reduzierung auf zuletzt 15 Texte im Volk sehr beliebt und gerade im katholischen Spanien des 16. Jahrhunderts weit verbreitet. Der Codex Rosario de Juana la Loca ist nicht als Buch, sondern nur in losen Blattern erhalten.
