Publicado por London: Printed for W. Johnson., 1765
Librería: John Price Antiquarian Books, ABA, ILAB, LONDON, Reino Unido
Original o primera edición
FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. xiv, [vi], 573 [574 blank], contemporary calf (worn and rubbed); rear joint cracked, front cover detached, spine creased, ex-library. Not a wonderful copy physically, but it has two other attractive features: one leaf (probably A8) is present both in cancelled and uncancelled state. The cancellandum contains Postscript (recto) and Errata (verso), with the leaf cut from the bottom (and, alas, repaired with tape); this leaf is followed by what appears to be a doubleton with Postscript, 2 pp. contents, and Errata. An undated London Library sticker (with cancellation stamp!) is on the front paste-down end-paper: Life Membership was then available for £26. Heath's work is dedicated to Henry Home, Lord Kames; Heath approves of Theobald's emendations but is rather less enthusiastic about those of Warburton.

FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 216 x 135 mms., pp. xiv, [iv Contents and Errata], 573 [574 blank], dedication (to Henry Home, Lord Kames) leaf in cancelled state, contemporary straight-grain plum morocco, spine gilt in compartments with titles blocked in gilt, all edges gilt; joints a bit rubbed, some slight general wear to binding, but a very good copy, with the bookplate of the politician and Chancellor of the Exchequer Richard Austen [Rab] Butler (1902 - 1982) on the front paste-down end-paper of each volume. Heath (1704 - 1766) approves of Theobald's emendations but is rather less enthusiastic about those of Warburton. He was a notable literary scholar and book collector, and most of his publications were on classical literature. His book was one of two on Shakespeare to be purchased in 1770 by the Library Company of Philadelphia for its collection. Dr. Johnson made use of a number of Heath's comments for his own edition of Shakespeare.

xiv, [ii], 573 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. First edition. First edition. xiv, [ii], 573 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Heath labors to "contribute his endoeavours towards a more correct and genuine edition of Shakespear's text than hath been published." Johnson, whose Shakespeare was published the same year, was immediately accused of plagiarism by William Kenrick in the Monthly Review--Johnson supposedly borrowing from Heath some 70 or 80 times. The details are confused and probably would have necessitated Johnson getting hold of a pre-publication copy of Heath's text. The debate about Johnson's indebtedness to Heath is in no way settled, and charges of plagiarism have continued into the 20th century. Jaggard 146; Lowndes 1029 Later boards. Bookplate to front pastedown. Nice copy.
