As new condition gray boards/blue-green spine/gold spine lettering contained in a new condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Preface; Acknowledgments; Notes and Index. Illustrated with black and white photographs. First American Edition, First Printing. "DeGaulle is one of the monumental figures of our time, and Lacouture France's premier practitioner of the art of fine biography. In this graceful translation, American readers will have the fullest account of deGaulle's dramatic career, and the fairest judgment of his place in history." - Gordon Wright, Bonsall Professor of History, Emeritus Stanford University "Savior of his nation in war; bold man of letters; patriot; a statesman who achieved reality for his political vision by the overwhelming force of his will: the personality that emerges in Jean Lacouture's magnificent biography of Charles de Gaulle seems larger than life, a presence of mythic proportion comparable only, among leaders of this century, to Winston Churchill and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Beginning with the childhood in Lille, through the heroic experiences in World War I and the swift rise to prominence in the French army, to that great moment of triumph, the liberation of Paris in August 1944, Lacouture's narrative reveals the highlights and shadows of this man obsessed with history and with his own role in the great, continuing drama of the French nation. Perceptions of the private de Gaulle - the schoolboy writing visionary essays on his future military achievements, the father caring for his handicapped daughter - are woven into this politically astute account of a career grounded in controversy. The unorthodox, if brilliant, workings of his mind, coupled with his unbending formality and an unwillingness to compromise, often isolated de Gaulle from his contemporaries. At many points we see him standing alone, as in his insistence on armored divisions to support the Maginot Line before World War II, or in his declaration of a Free France in defiance of the Vichy government, or in the passionate disagreements with Churchill and Roosevelt over allied strategy. Exhaustively researched, Lacouture's biography draws on de Gaulle's letters, his personal diaries, the writings of his contemporaries, military files, newspapers, the work of numerous historians, and a close reading of de Gaulle's own published writings, which reveal the development of his intellect and the growth of his influence on modern warfare. The book has been hailed in France as one of the supreme works of contemporary biography: a meticulous and moving record of de Gaulle's life and a sympathetic but even-handed evaluation of a great leader and statesman. The publication of this volume, the first of two, coincides with the centenary celebration of de Gaulle's birth. De Gaulle: The Ruler 1945-1970 will be published in 1991." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
