Während der langwierigen Therapie begann Cathleen Schine, für das Magazin The Village Voice" über diese Erfahrungen zu schreiben. Der Herausgeber ermutigte sie, das Material auch für ein Buch zu verwenden. So debütierte sie 1983 mit dem Roman Alice in Bed", der das Leben einer gewitzten, an einer schmerzhaften Hüfterkrankung leidenden jungen Frau erzählt und von der Kritik lobend rezensiert wurde.
