Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 175 pp. with appendix roster of the Richmond Prison Association (list of those imprisoned) and their status as of early 1862. Frontispiece engraving "Our Last Day in the Richmond Tobacco Warehouse Prison". First hand account of the imprisonment of Union Army members in 1861-2 at the Tobacco Warehouse in Richmond. Beautifully rebound, some foxing, some pages have tanned lightly, otherwise contents are VG. Scarce. The author states in the preface: "these sketches were written to lessen the tedium of my lengthy imprisonment written within prison walls and brought to the North sewn securely in the lining of an overcoat." At the Battle of Ball's Bluff (October 21, 1861), 678 Union soldiers were taken prisoner. They were subsequently marched to Manassas and then taken by train to Richmond. There they were incarcerated in a large tobacco warehouse. Those who survived were paroled in late February, 1862. Other sketches included but not limited to: "A Day in the Officers' Prison", "A Day in the Privates' Prison", "Pursuits and Pastimes", "Prison Incidents", 'Prison Companions," etc. Nevins: I, 193.
