Hardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. Harold Berson Ilustrador. Pirate Gold by Charles Coppock was published by The Macmillan Company, New York, New York, in 1959. This 32-page, 55-year-old, 6" X 7 3/4" offering is an ex-library copy in G condition. There are some of the usual library markings observed, and some modest yellowing of end papers and pages of text. Light foxing is seen, but minimal, and there are a number of pages with creased outer corners. A 5"-long, thin, vertical line of soft violet crayon is seen on the title page. This charming story about cut-throats advancing the business of piracy in the far reaches of the Pacific is an adaptation of Coppock's original creation, albeit with all new illustrations(masterfully rendered by Harold Berson in the manner of soft, charcoal drawings). Coppock's initial publication was made possible under a grant from the Works Progress Administration of the 1930's. The story, rated at about end-of-the-fourth-grade reading level in the Macmillan Readers Series, is actually fair game for readers of all ages above said level--it's beautifully told. Set on the island of Java, in the beginning, anyway, our main characters are Captain Judd, a little, yellow-haired boy, Old Blacksails, and Blacksails' scurvy crew of malcontents. Captain Judd operates a tiny, dingy, but rather prosperous shop dealing in sailors' supplies. A mysterious, bearded man has dropped the yellow-haired boy in Judd's lap, as it were, and then promptly dashes away. Soon after, the dreaded pirate, Old Blacksails, arrives, and with bad intentions. Blacksails knows the little boy's father as a fellow pirate, a pirate with a large treasure hidden away somewhere. Blacksails takes Judd and the little boy(now dubbed "Java") hostage/prisoner, and orders Java to take the helm and steer all of them to the treasure of gold--Captain Judd and Java are as good as dead if Java fails to deliver. That's all I'll reveal, except to say that Java does reveal that he thinks the treasure is hidden somewhere within the City of Leaning Walls, located on a green island in the Yellow Sea.
