This unprecedented volume presents one of the most significant but least investigated aspects of Picasso's work: its roots in Italian art. "Picasso: The Italian Journey" reveals the fascinating ties between Picasso's work and his experiences in Italy. There he began his second rose period, and absorbed the powerful spirit of Renaissance, Classical and Mannerist art and Italian culture. Picasso jealously guarded his scores of notebooks until the end of his life. Ten scholars have drawn on this material, which provides a wealth of fascinating details on Picasso's travels in Italy, and particularly on his stage design. The small - and in some cases tiny - albums crammed full of drawings, artistic or private annotations, erotic doodles, practical reminders, sketches, studies and specific notes for paintings and sculptures, have helped answer many questions about Picasso's life and work. Picasso was meticulous in building his personal archive, hoarding hundreds of postcards and prints which he scavenged with Stravinsky and Cocteau in the shops of the Piazza di Spagna in Rome. There are invitations, sheets of hotel notepaper, currency exchange receipts and even labels from mineral water bottles that confirm details of his life and his mania for collecting. The notebooks reveal the source for his stage curtain for "Parade" - a postcard of a Vesuvian scenetta by the painter Achille Vianelli, whose popular prints were published in Naples in the first half of the nineteenth century. Essays document Picasso's set designs, the influence of Fra Angelico, his meetings with the Futurists and his associations with Satie and Diaghilev. Copiously illustrated with personal notes, sketches, drawings, paintings and set design, this book is an essential contribution to scholarship on the life and art of Picasso.
