"In 1899, the University of Pennsylvania published The Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study, the first scholarly race study of an urban place in what became a growing trend of Progressive-era social surveys. The massive report about Philadelphia's Seventh Ward became a distinctive (and still relevant) landmark in the annals of sociological study and social advocacy. In spring 1896, at the suggestion of leading citizen Susan P. Wharton, the University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia's own College Settlement sent for the rising African American scholar William E. Burghardt Du Bois (1868-1963), then a professor at Ohio's Wilberforce University, to conduct a study of the city's black community, which many critics held responsible for a post-depression (1893-96) rise in crime and disorder. Accepting the invitation, even at the lowly title of "Assistant Instructor," Du Bois began in August 1896 to 'ascertain something of the geographical distribution of this race, their occupations and daily life, their homes, their organizations and, above all, their relation to their million white fellow-citizens.' The massive report that followed went far beyond the Hull-House model, and far beyond what its patrons anticipated or perhaps desired." (Steven McGrail, Ph.D., Philadelphia Encyclopedia). HBS 69015. $2,000.

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Thick octavo, tan buckram library binding, bound by the Great Barrington Free Library (sometime between 1899 and 1913), with several inconsequential library markings. 520 pages, plus 8 pages of advertisements. ---- Divided into 18 chapters, the volume analyzes the history, demography, family, migrations, education, occupations, health, organized life (especially in the churches), criminals and prisons, pauperism, alcoholism, housing, amusements, class differentiations, contact between races, and voting and political activities of the "Philadelphia Negro." It includes Isabel Eaton's survey "Special Reports on Negro Domestic Service in the Seventh Ward Philadelphia," along with numerous appendices, charts, graphs, diagrams, and two large foldout maps: map of Seventh Ward, showing distribution of Black inhabitants throughout the ward, and their social condition; map of Seventh Ward, showing streets and political divisions. Covers soiled, text and maps are in fine condition. ---- First edition, first printing of what Du Bois bibliographer and scholar Herbert Aptheker considered "an exceptional piece of seminal work in the history of sociology." Aptheker 1955; Blockson 3734. --- A quintessential presentation copy, bearing the printed bookplate: "Presented to the Great Barrington Free Library," beneath which Du Bois or a surrogate had inscribed in pen, "The Author, Prof. W. E. Du Bois, Atlanta, Georgia," affixed to the front pastedown. ---- 1899 was both a tragic and a triumphant year for Du Bois. On May 24, his 2-year-old son Burghardt died in Atlanta and was buried later that month in the Mahaiwe Cemetery, in Great Barrington; the "Philadelphia Negro" was published in the fall to critical acclaim. When did the Great Barrington Free Library receive this copy from Du Bois, or why did it rebind the volume, is difficult to pinpoint. ------- Background regarding Du Bois and the Great Barrington Free Library: 1). Du Bois was born (1868), raised, and educated in Great Barrington. As a student he frequented the Free Library. He left his hometown for Fisk University in 1885. 2). The Free Library was established in 1881; originally located in a room at town hall, it was later moved to a house on Main Street. In 1911, the Free Library Corporation and a substantial financial gift from a local resident made possible the purchase of a site off Main Street and wherewithal to construct the Mason Library, which opened its doors in 1913 (at that time, the Free Library consolidated its holdings with the Mason inventory). What is conclusive is that between 1899 and 1913, Du Bois presented this copy to the Free Library, which, during that same period of time, had it rebound. --- A foundational copy linking Great Barrington's distinguished native son, considered one of the nation's towering intellectuals, to his hometown library. Signed by Author(s).
