Hardcover. Condición: Good. First Ed. The year is 1738; the place, Paris. A baby is born under a fish-mongers bloody table in a marketplace, and abandoned. Orphaned, passed over to the monks as a charity case, already there is something in the aura of the tiny infant that is unsettling. No one will look after him; he is somehow too demanding, and, even more disturbing, something is missing: as his wet nurse tries to explain, he doesnt smell the way a baby should smell; indeed, he has no scent at all.Slowly, as we watch Jean-Baptiste Grenouille cling stubbornly to life, we begin to realize that a monster is growing before our eyes. With mounting unease, yet hypnotized, we see him explore his powers and their effect on the world around him. For this dark and sinister boy who has no smell himself possesses an absolute sense of smell, and with it he can read the world to discover the hidden truths that elude ordinary men. He can smell the very composition of objects, and their history, and where they have been, he has no need of the light, and darkness is not dark to him, because nothing can mask the odors of the universe. As he leaves childhood behind and comes to understand his terrible uniqueness, his obsession becomes the quest to identify, and then to isolate, the most perfect scent of all, the scent of life itself. At first, he hones his powers, learning the ancient arts of perfume-making until the exquisite fragrances he creates are the rage of Paris, and indeed Europe. Then, secure in his mastery of these means to an end, he withdraws into a strange and agonized solitude, waiting, dreaming, until the morning when he wakes, ready to embark on his monstrous quest: to find and extract from the most perfect living creatures-the most beautiful young virgins in the land- that ultimate perfume which alone can make him, too, fully human. As his trail leads him, at an ever-quickening pace, from his savage exile to the heart of the country and then back to Paris, we are caught up in a rising storm of terror and mortal sensual conquest until the frenzy of his final triumph explodes in all its horrifying consequences.Told with dazzling narrative brilliance and the haunting power of a grown-up fairy tale, Perfume is one of the most remarkable novels of the last fifty years.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. First edition, later printing - published in German as "Das Parfum: Die Geschichte eines Morders" by Diogenes Verlag AG in Zurich in 1985, but probably a later printing as there is a review of "Die Taube" [The Pigeon] on the front flap of the dustwrapper which was only published in 1987. The printer's code 200/93/24/30 implies a 1993 printing. This printing also has a barcode on the back panel. ***Please note also that this is an ex-library copy. ***Very good in olive green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on a paper label to the spine. The boards are very thin, but there are no creases or bumps. Corners sharp. Boards clean but there are some tape residue marks from where the dustwrapper had been taped. There is a library 'Withdrawn' stamp to the top edge of the page block. Internally very good, but with some library marks as follows: Withdrawn stamp to top of illustrated front free endpaper; initials at top corner of second blank leaf; some scuff tearing to the illustrated rear pastedown where a library label has been removed. No other obvious library marks [please see scans]. Maps of Paris illustrate the front and rear free endpapers and pastedowns. Very slight reading lean. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour-illustrated dustwrapper, which is just very lightly creased at the edges. No chips or tears. Dustwrapper bright, however, the spine of the dustwrapper has faded from black to blue. ***190 mm x125 mm. 320 pages. ***'This is the story of one Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, born under a fishmonger's bloody slab in eighteenth-century Paris. For his brutal birth signals the beginning of one of the strangest lives ever imagined, and a career of very violent genius. ***As a human being, Grenouille is handicapped from the start, and at the same time outstandingly gifted. His mother is executed for murder. Wet nurses refuse to nurse him. In the orphanage other boys shun him. But as he grows up in isolation two facts begin to dawn on him. One is that he is blessed with an extraordinarily sharp sense of smell. The other - the cause of his rejection - is that he has no smell of his own. Then a chance meeting with an ageing parfumier on the Pont au Change, during which he exactly replicates a perfume for the old man, sets Grenouille on the road to fame. And on the bloody part of murder. ***Part fable, part surreal fantasy, part novel of suspense, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer is the work of a brilliant talent. The originality of the story, the dynamo of the writing, the supremely sensual grasp of one man's secret world, make it a novel worthy of comparison with the great European masters.' (Quote taken from the inside front flap of the dustwrapper of the first British edition, which we also have listed). ***An ex-library copy of a later printing of the first edition in German, complete in its original dustwrapper. A good reading copy - ideal for someone who wants to read this classic work in the original language. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
