Interior coloring subtle but still bright. Cloth boards clay red with red lettering in gilt box on front cover. Inside front/back gutters showing spine and loosening same as weight of text block has torn away at the paper which shows stains along the gutter. GOOD condition. BIOGRAPHY by N. Mumey (Johnson Publishing Co.) - 1 of 350 copies. 78 pp. with index. Some uncut pages. Tipped-in pencil portrait opposite title page, tipped-in map at back. These are all beautifully reproduced in facsimile by Colorado historian Nolie Mumey.

A very good copy. In a red half morocco and cloth clamshell box, spine gilt. An exceptional book, and one of the half- dozen major illustrated works on the American West produced in the 19th century, ranking with Bodmer, Catlin, Moran, and Warre as an illustrated depiction of the opening of the West. It is the only one of these to show scenes of mining, so vital to the development of the West, and of the evolution of towns and cities, notably Denver. Alfred Mathews was a pioneering creator of city and country views in the American West. This is his first and most lavish view book, using multiple tint stones on each plate. His other notable books, PENCIL SKETCHES OF MONTANA (1868), GEMS OF ROCKY MOUNTAIN SCENERY (1869), and CANON CITY, COLORADO (1870), employ only one tint stone on the plates. "These views are celebrated for their documentary accuracy - apparently contemporary viewers could identify in the street views the rigs of various townspeople" - Streeter. Mathews writes in the preface: "'The author herewith offers to the public a collection of lithographed sketches of Colorado, embracing its Cities, and most of its Principal Towns together with some of the beautiful Mountain Scenery which abounds in this incomparable territory.[My aim is] to represent that portion of the country to which interest is attached on account of the rich gold and silver mines; and, if possible, to give non-residents an idea of the beauty and grandeur of the natural scenery in the mountains, which will compare favorably, in this respect, with any in the world." Alfred Edward Mathews (1831-1874) emigrated to the U.S. from England and became an itinerant bookseller and artist. He came to Colorado in 1865, having honed his illustrative skills as a Union soldier during the Civil War. He sought to present the awesome natural beauty of Colorado, as well as mining interests there. His documentary illustrations of the American West are accurate and attractive, among the earliest and most important of his time. Julius Bien, an American lithographer originally from Germany, was a specialist in chromolithography. Based in New York City, he printed a broad array of topics and maps, including a lithographed edition of John J. Audubon's The Birds of America. From the collection of William S. Reese (1955-2018), who was one of the great Americana booksellers. His firm continues to trade in New Haven. After his death, Christie's New York sold his private collection (24-25 May 2022; the present item was lot 260).
