Paperback. Condición: Very Good. New London Style takes a fresh look into the private dwellings of the most exciting young creative talents in the city, from the music, fashion, design and art worlds. This exciting aesthetic takes many forms, but above all it expresses a creative sensibility against the backdrop of the ever-changing environment of one of the worlds most exciting cities. The 28 houses in the book are loosely arranged by location, in the grooviest, on-the-edge neighbourhoods fromWhitechapel to Notting Hill, Camberwell to Clerkenwell and reflect the cosmopolitan melting pot that influences the citys design trends.Whether in a mews house, derelict pub, or even a church, this new wave of lively Londoners is injecting funkiness and bright ideas into a range of highly individualistic and inspirational interiors. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Two works in one volume, 4to, pp. 52; [ii], 28; without the half title to the second work; but a very attractive volume in contemporary smooth calf, with morocco label: 'West's Poems'. First editions. Gilbert West (1703-1756) was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, and was a nephew of Lord Cobham, creator of the gardens at Stowe. He was an ardent Spenserian, and had already published an anonymous imitation (A Canto of the Fairy Queen) in 1739. His poem Education not a promising subject for another attempt at copying Spenser, one would have thought describes the wanderings of a 'gentle knight' and his son, who are accompanied by a palmer, or pilgrim, commonly identified as a representation of John Locke. At the end of the poem they encounter a magical structure adorned with statues of great people, which (in a lengthy footnote) West explains as an allegory of the Biographia Britannia, 'that useful and entertaining work' which 'deserves, in my Opinion, to be encouraged by all, who have at Heart the Honour of their Country'. The second work in this volume is another imitation and continuation of The Faerie Queene, published by the same bookseller, George Hawkins, as had published West's in 1739 and perhaps intended as a continuation of it. There is no reason to think West the author of this second imitation (although it's notable that this volume is labelled 'West's Poems'). It is often attributed to the literary scholar John Upton (1707-60), following an inscription in a copy at the Bodleian; but although Upton published a critical edition of The Faerie Queene in 1758, he is not known as a writer of original verse, and the ascription seems a bit unlikely. In the Lives of the Poets, Johnson makes some acute observations on West's Spenserian poems: His Imitations of Spenser are very successfully performed, both with respect to the metre, the language, and the fiction; and being engaged at once by the excellence of the sentiments, and the artifice of the copy, the mind has two amusements together. But such compositions are not to be reckoned among the great atchievements of intellect, because their effect is local and temporary; they appeal not to reason or passion, but to memory, and presuppose an accidental or artificial state of mind. Works of this kind may deserve praise, as proofs of great industry, and great nicety of observation; but the highest praise, the praise of genius, they cannot claim. The noblest beauties of art are those of which the effect is co-extended with rational nature, or at least with the whole circle of polished life; what is less than this can by only pretty, the plaything of fashion, and the amusement of a day. Foxon N117 (second work).

FIRST EDITION. Large folding engraved map at rear; map torn from gutter margin and a little frayed where it extends beyond the binding, but no loss; uniformly toned; pp. [8], 168, lxiv, 8vo; contemporary sprinkled calf, gilt roll at board edges spine ruled gilt in compartments with raised bands; corners bumped, joints a little tender; armorial bookplate of Thomas Edwards-Freeman (1726-1806) director of the South Sea Company, and MP. for Steyning and Lewes. Scarce in commerce, this written atlas of the major roads of England and Wales arranged according to the main arterial routes from London. It includes useful paragraphs of information about noteworthy towns en route, with details such as principle manufactures, ordnance, churches and seats of learning, branching roads, alternative routes, and major junctions. Historically minded, the author sometimes includes etymology of place names, and a great deal of information about Roman Britain, including their main settlements the roads which connected them. At the end are a handy table outlining the new Mail Roads and their promised delivery times, the main postal towns in the kingdom, and - a rather arcane inclusion - a list of mitred abbots. It closes with a list of the country's significant fairs, striking for its length. These fairs, 'regulated according to the new style', are those which succumbed to the increasingly far-reaching legislation which was put in place from the 1730s with an aim to ameliorate their disorderly potential (see: Anne Wohlcke, The 'Perpetual Fair': Gender, disorder and urban amusement in eighteenth-century London (Manchester, 2014) p. 19.). In all, a charming little book with a host of sundry information for the mid eighteenth-century traveller. (Fordham p.23).

Mapa
Hand-coloured engraved map, within a decorative border which contains the title, scale and publisher's advertisements, dissected and mounted on linen, as issued. Printed advert label to verso. With slipcase, this with green printed paper label, slightly rubbed. Size: 114cm by 55cm. Extending from Paddington, Kensington and Knightsbridge in the West, to Bromley and East India Docks in the East. St. Pancras, Pentonville and Hoxton in the North, to Chelsea, Kennington and Walworth in the South. George Frederick Cruchley (1796 1880) was the publisher of 'some of the clearest and most attractive London maps' (Howgego). Cruchley began his cartographic career in the publishing firm of Aaron Arrowsmith. In 1823, he set up on his own at 38, Ludgate Street until 1834, when he moved to 81, Fleet Street. It would appear that he had some help from his former employer, as much of his early output bears in the imprint 'From Arrowsmith's'. He would later acquire a great deal of Arrowsmith's stock. In 1844, he took over the stock of George and John Cary, which he republished until 1876. In 1877 his entire stock was sold at auction with many of the plates being bought by Gall and Inglis. Cruchley himself died in Brighton in 1880. Not in Howgego but c.f. 317a, (15).
