Quarter Leather. Condición: Good. Wale, Hamiltion, Hawkins, Thornton, Pollard Ilustrador. A good copy in recent quarter leather binding, with frontispiece, folding map of England and Wales, maps of Scotland and Ireland, and 103 further full page plates. Like many attempts to cover 'earliest history' to 'the present day', this is somewhat sketchy on the early sections, but increasingly detailed almost to a diary approach on 'the present day'. This is a later edition - undated - but the last entry is for June 10th 1790. The author simply added pages to update so although the text pagination runs to p714, the index section starts at p709 reflecting the smaller initial version. Known particularly for its lavish engravings - especially the later ones covering the American War of Independence. This copy has been recently rebound: the binding has a leather spine and title label and marbled boards and is in very good condition. New endpapers. Contents with frontispiece, title page, dedication, table, preface with decorative tailpiece, folding map of England and Wales and text to p 714, Index p709-712, directions to the binder and 4 page list of subscribers. The initial (up to around p20) and final pages have very fragile page edges and small outer margin tears. The folding map has been laid out on a paper backing for support. The paper has brown toning and there is occasional marking and light staining. There is some mispagination (eg p441-444 are missing but the text is continuous). There are a number of small tears to pages which have been repaired - these generally affect margins rather than text. 3 plates have been damaged - one is repaired; the other two have loss to margins with the plate of King John signing the Magna Charta losing a little of the bottom title. We can provide more images on request.

Crown Folio, 39cm, iv,5-710,[iv]p., (list of subscribers & 1 page ad), indexed, plus 3 maps (1 folding) and 105 engraved plate illustrations, in half dark brown calf, gilt decorated raised bands, crushed crimson morocco label, gilt titles and decorated borders, matched marbled boards, a fine remarkabily clean copy attractively bound of the rare first edition.(cgc). A detailed early history of England, known particularly for its lavish engravings - especially the later ones covering the American War of Independence; twelve plates starting at page 686. Oxford Dictionary of Biography. V3. - p237. BARNABD, Edward (1717-1781 ), provost of Eton, born in 1717, was the son of a Bedfordshire clergyman. He was on the foundation at Eton, but, becoming superannuated, entered at St. John's College, Cambridge, where he became B.A. 1738, M.A. 1742, B.D. 1750 and D.D. 1756. He was fellow of his college from March 1743-4 to 1756. In 1752 he was at Eton as tutor to Henry Townshend, brother to Lord Sydney, and he became also tutor to George Hardinge, afterwards Welsh justice, Whose recollections of Barnard are given at length in Nichols's Anecdotes' (viii. 543). Barnard succeeded Sumner as head master of Eton in 1754, and raised the numbers of the school from three hundred to five hundred. He received a canonry of Windsor in 1761, and in 1764 became provost of Eton. He was also rector of St. Pau1's Cray, Kent. He died 2 Dec. 1801. A tablet to his memory, with an inscription, is in Eton College chapel. Barnard, according to Hardinge, was a man of coarse features and clumsy figure, but with a humour and vivacity which, but for his physical disadvantages, would have made him the equal of Garrick; and he ruled his boys chiefly by force of ridicule. Upon Barnard's death Johnson, according to Mrs. Piozzi, pronounced a long eulogium upon his wit, learning, and goodness, and added: He was the only man that did justice to my good breeding, and you may observe that I am well bred to a needless degree of *scrupulosity.' He is not to be confounded with Thomas Barnard, the bishop of Killaloe and Limerick [q. v.], who was also a friend of Johnson.(*Scrupulosity is a psychological disorder primarily characterized by pathological guilt or obsession associated with moral or religious issues that is often accompanied by compulsive moral or religious observance and is highly distressing and maladaptive) and Eulogium, a formal expression of praise for someone who has died recently).

Libro
Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 2nd Edition, Illustrated Edition. Second edition, crown folio (15.25 in x 9.5 in), pp. iv, (5)-710, (4) subscribers list and adv, 102 folio copper engraved plates, 3 copper engraved maps including one folding, copper engraved head and tail pieces for the preface. The editions of the work are undated and probably best judged chronologically by how far the text extends. In this case the last plate concerns an event of Feb, 1783 and the last date in the text is July, 1783 The text is complete, ends with "Finis" at the bottom of p. 710 and is followed by the subscribers list and one page of advertising. An edition just after this one extended the pages to 712. World Cat lists several copies as "1791?". Later editions added pages of text and plates and extended coverage at least into the early 19th century, though with new editorial help. The first edition appears to be 1782 and the title page indicates "to the Middle of the Year MDCCLXXXII" (1782). After 1782 the title page reads "to the End of the Present Year". An outstanding history for the plates, which include fourteen plates from 1776 to 1783, a dozen of these pertaining to the American Revolution and its settlement. Full old green sheep with old professional re-back (old enough that its green has nearly completely faded). Sides with gilt roll tooled borders. Smooth back with six gilt roll tooled compartments, gilt lettered in the second. Original old binder's end sheets. Sheets and plates are remarkably clean and fresh but for a water stain to the rear endpapers diminishing to the adv and subscribers list and to the index showing just very faintly and not affecting the text or plates. Binding with strong joints but with surface scuffs and gouges and rubbing. Edges with wear, corners bumped and worn. H10306 All Items Are Sent Insured.
